Kano Governor Accuses Ex-Deputy of Coup Attempt

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has accused his former deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam, of attempting to unseat him and assume the governorship. The allegation was made during a meeting with a group of praise singers, known as Mawallafan Abba Gida Gida, at the Government House in Kano.

Abdussalam, popularly called Gwarzo, resigned from his position amid moves by the state House of Assembly to impeach him. Following his resignation, the lawmakers discontinued the impeachment process. Governor Yusuf stated that he had not received or even seen Abdussalam’s resignation letter, insisting that his administration had done nothing to warrant the decision to step down.

“Today, the deputy governor who was elected alongside us is no longer part of this government. No one wronged him. In fact, I have not even come across his resignation letter, so why should I be concerned about it?” Yusuf said.

The governor further alleged that Abdussalam’s actions were driven by an attempt to remove him from office and take over as governor, but noted that the plan did not succeed. “Whatever pushed him to act in that manner was an effort to depose me and occupy the seat, but God did not permit it,” he added.

Yusuf also expressed concern about how the former deputy governor was treated within the Kwankwasiyya Movement, questioning why he was not granted the same political opportunity he was reportedly pursuing. “The deputy governor who left in hopes of getting that ticket—what was his offence? Why wasn’t he given the chance? Isn’t that unfair to him?” the governor asked.

The development has sparked discussions about internal dynamics within the Kwankwasiyya Movement and the political landscape in Kano State. Governor Yusuf’s remarks highlight the tensions that have emerged within the administration and the broader political implications of Abdussalam’s resignation.
