Ifeanyi Okowa Declares Run for Delta Senate Seat in 2027

Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has formally declared his intention to contest for a seat in the Nigerian Senate, representing Delta North Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections.

Okowa, who served two terms as governor from 2015 to 2023, made the announcement on Monday as political activities intensify ahead of the next electoral cycle. The seat he aims to occupy is currently held by Ned Nwoko, a billionaire businessman and husband of actress Regina Daniels, who won the position under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023.

In a significant political shift, Okowa has aligned himself with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a departure from his previous affiliation with the PDP, under whose banner he ran as vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 elections. His decision to contest under the APC has already stirred political discussions in Delta State, given his long-standing association with the PDP and his influence in the state’s political landscape.

The Delta North district, comprising the three local government areas of Oshimili North, Oshimili South, and Aniocha North, is considered a key battleground in state politics. Okowa’s entry into the race is expected to reshape the dynamics of the contest, particularly as he brings a wealth of governance experience and a strong political network to the campaign.

Political analysts suggest that Okowa’s move could signal broader realignments within Delta State’s political structure, especially as the 2027 elections approach. His candidacy is likely to attract significant attention from both supporters and opponents, given his track record as governor and his national profile following the 2023 presidential campaign.

As the election season nears, stakeholders across the political spectrum are closely watching developments in Delta North, where the contest is anticipated to be closely fought.
