Ladan Salihu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has warned Nigerians to be cautious about accepting the assurances of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, at face value. During an interview on Arise Television on Monday, Salihu discussed the controversy surrounding the ADC’s alleged denial of permission to use Eagles Square in Abuja for its national convention. Wike had previously dismissed these claims, asserting that the ADC had not submitted a formal application for the venue.
In response to the minister’s statement, Salihu contended that the ADC had indeed made both formal and informal contacts with the relevant authorities, including those responsible for security at the venue and major hotels in the Federal Capital Territory. He highlighted the symbolic significance of Eagles Square, referring to it as a national emblem of political cohesion and democracy. This venue was conceived by former military leader Ibrahim Babangida and completed under Abdulsalami Abubakar. Historically, Eagles Square has hosted significant political events, including the inauguration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and has been accessible to political parties regardless of the ruling government.
Salihu expressed his frustration, stating, “This is the shame of a nation that the main opposition political party is clearly denied the privilege and the right to undertake our convention there.” His comments reflect the escalating tensions between the ADC and the FCT administration, raising concerns about political inclusivity and the use of public spaces for democratic processes in Nigeria.
