Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has urged the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to field a strong candidate in the next election, asserting that President Bola Tinubu will not hand power to the opposition. Speaking at the party’s national convention in Abuja on Tuesday, Amaechi criticised the current administration’s handling of national security, pointing to rising killings, kidnappings, and displacement across the country.
He called on ADC leaders to unite and mount a credible challenge to the government, questioning why officials would attempt to prevent lawful political gatherings despite constitutional protections. “How can a man who claims to be a democrat be stopping democracy?” he asked, challenging the party to decide on a viable candidate and confront the administration directly.
Amaechi also condemned what he described as a culture of corruption and impunity among some politicians, accusing them of prioritising personal enrichment over public service. His remarks come amid growing public frustration over insecurity and governance in Nigeria, with many citizens demanding stronger opposition to hold the government accountable. The ADC convention signals the party’s intent to position itself as a formidable force in the country’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
