Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has called on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to nominate a strong candidate for the upcoming election, emphasizing that President Bola Tinubu will not willingly relinquish power to the opposition. Speaking at the party’s national convention in Abuja on Tuesday, Amaechi criticized the current administration’s approach to national security, highlighting the alarming increase in killings, kidnappings, and displacements throughout the country.
Amaechi urged ADC leaders to come together and present a credible challenge to the government. He questioned the rationale behind attempts by officials to obstruct lawful political gatherings, despite the constitutional protections in place. “How can a man who claims to be a democrat be stopping democracy?” he asked, prompting the party to identify a viable candidate capable of directly confronting the administration.
Additionally, Amaechi condemned what he referred to as a culture of corruption and impunity among certain politicians, accusing them of prioritizing personal gain over public service. His comments reflect the growing public frustration regarding insecurity and governance in Nigeria, with many citizens calling for a stronger opposition to hold the government accountable. The ADC convention marks the party’s determination to establish itself as a significant player in the country’s political arena as future elections approach.
