ADC Crisis in Adamawa: Binani Faction Resigns Over Democracy Row

Fresh divisions have emerged within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Adamawa State following the announcement of a mass resignation by a faction aligned with Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed Binani. The group, drawn from across the state’s three senatorial zones, cited what it described as a “total collapse of internal democracy” and the “destruction of party structures” as reasons for its decision.

The development was revealed in a communiqué issued after a stakeholders’ meeting convened at the residence of Hon. Mijiyewa Umaru Kugama. The meeting brought together key party actors who expressed deep dissatisfaction with the leadership of the ADC at both state and national levels.

Central to the dispute are the party’s recent congresses, which the stakeholders claim were conducted in violation of court rulings and existing injunctions. They accused the leadership, under Ishaya Bauka (retd), of imposing illegitimate structures and sidelining majority voices within the party. The communiqué described the congresses as “fundamentally flawed, manipulated, and imposed against the will of the majority of party members.”

The group declared a vote of no confidence in the current leadership and announced their “immediate and irreversible resignation en masse” from the party. They also rejected all outcomes of the disputed congresses, declaring them “null and void.”

While no new political platform was officially named, the stakeholders mandated Senator Binani to lead the transition and coordinate a unified strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political analysts suggest the move could significantly reshape the political landscape in Adamawa, particularly with Binani widely expected to remain a central figure in the state’s governorship race.

The communiqué outlined plans for a coordinated defection structure spanning polling units, wards, and local government areas, alongside aggressive grassroots mobilisation under a new platform. The group described the decision as “the beginning of a new political direction anchored on credibility, inclusiveness, and true democratic ideals.”

The crisis within the ADC adds to growing tensions within opposition parties nationwide, with analysts warning that unresolved internal disputes could weaken party cohesion ahead of future elections.
