Nigeria Cup hopes on dual‑nationals joining Super Eagles

Former Nigerian international Peter Osaze Odemwingie has raised concerns about the Super Eagles’ World Cup prospects, pointing to the trend of talented players of Nigerian descent opting to represent England and other European nations.

Speaking to Brila Sports, the 43‑year‑old ex‑West Brom striker – who, despite having Russian and Nigerian heritage, chose to play for Nigeria and debuted for the Super Eagles in 2002 – questioned how Nigeria can succeed on football’s biggest stage when many of its promising players develop abroad.

Odemwingie highlighted the cases of several dual‑nationality players who have elected to represent England or France rather than Nigeria. “Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Tammy Abraham, Noni Madueke and Michael Olise have all chosen England or France,” he said. “Parents play a part, but today’s generation also seeks pride elsewhere, showing off for Africa only as a side note. That’s another part of the problem.”

The former striker cautioned against judging individual decisions, noting that a future where the entire England squad comprises players of Nigerian descent would underscore the depth of Nigerian talent. “It’s the Nigerian genes that will help us win the World Cup when our talents serve other nations,” Odemwingie remarked. He added that a reversal could occur if more players with Nigerian heritage decide to play for the Super Eagles, bringing the experience of higher‑level football environments to the national team.

Nigeria’s football federation has long sought to tap into its diaspora, offering outreach programs and incentives to encourage dual‑nationality players to join the national side. Odemwingie’s comments renew the conversation about talent retention and the role of family and cultural identity in national team selection.

As the Super Eagles prepare for upcoming qualifiers, the issue of player allegiance remains a strategic concern for the Nigeria Football Federation. Strengthening ties with the Nigerian diaspora could become a pivotal factor in building a squad capable of competing for World Cup qualification and, eventually, the title.
