IGP Orders Massive Shake-Up: 1,332 Delta Police Officers Redeployed After Mene Ogidi Killing Sparks National Outrage

The development comes amid mounting nationwide outrage over the alleged extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman.

According to an internal wireless signal dated May 3, 2026, and obtained by SaharaReporters, the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja ordered the immediate transfer of 1,332 officers from the Delta State Command to various commands and formations across the country under reference number CH:5360/FS/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.42/182.

The sweeping directive, reportedly approved by Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu and signed by Assistant Inspector-General Bode Akinbamilowo on behalf of the Force Secretary, instructed all affected officers to proceed to their new postings with immediate effect, while receiving commands must report compliance to Force Headquarters by May 22, 2026.

The signal was distributed to Deputy Inspectors-General, Assistant Inspectors-General, Commissioners of Police nationwide, specialised tactical units, police training institutions, and strategic formations, including the Police Mobile Force, Border Patrol, Interpol, Anti-Terrorism Unit, and Force Criminal Investigation Department.

This large-scale redeployment is widely viewed as a direct institutional response to public backlash following the April 26 killing of Mene Ogidi, who was allegedly restrained and shot at close range by ASP Nuhu Usman after being accused of unknowingly transporting a firearm through a delivery package. Viral footage of the incident triggered intense public condemnation, human rights concerns, and demands for sweeping police reforms. ASP Nuhu Usman was subsequently arrested and transferred to Abuja for disciplinary and criminal proceedings.

Among those transferred were numerous ASP II officers redeployed from Delta State Command to Edo, Anambra, Abia, Imo, and other state commands, suggesting an extensive restructuring within the command’s operational framework.

The unprecedented scale of the transfers signals one of the most significant disciplinary and administrative actions by the Nigeria Police Force in recent years, as authorities attempt to restore public confidence and address growing concerns over police brutality and accountability.
