US rapper Kodak Black arrested on drug trafficking charge in Florida

US rapper Kodak Black, whose legal name is Bill Kapri, was arrested in central Florida on a felony charge of trafficking MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy or molly. The arrest took place on Wednesday, and Kapri was booked into the Orange County Jail with a bond set at $75,000. He entered a not‑guilty plea and requested a jury trial, while waiving the requirement to appear in person at a future arraignment in state court.

The incident follows a police encounter in Orlando in November. Residents reported hearing gunshots, prompting officers to respond to a neighborhood where several individuals, including Kapri, were gathered around parked luxury sport‑utility vehicles. An officer observed a white substance on a $100 bill found inside a Lamborghini SUV that also emitted a cannabis odor. The odor provided probable cause for a vehicle search, during which officers discovered a pink bag containing a plastic bag of MDMA, $37,000 in cash and documents bearing Kapri’s name.

Investigators linked the pink bag to a photograph the rapper posted on Instagram, which showed a similar bag and a distinctive lighter also recovered by police. All individuals present, including Kapri, denied ownership of the bag. Kapri asserted that the cash belonged to his business and requested its return.

Kapri’s legal representatives at Universal Music Group, Ambrosia Healy and Kevin Young, did not respond to requests for comment.

This arrest adds to a series of prior legal issues for the 28‑year‑old. In 2023, Kapri was stopped in Plantation, Florida, after being found asleep at the wheel with a white powder near his mouth. Initial field tests suggested cocaine, but laboratory analysis later identified the substance as oxycodone, for which Kapri held a prescription. The incident violated his probation from an unrelated case, resulting in a two‑month detention in Miami.

Earlier, in 2022, Kapri faced charges of oxycodone trafficking and possession of a controlled substance without a prescription. He was released on bond with mandatory drug testing. In 2023, he was ordered to complete a 30‑day drug‑rehabilitation program after missing a drug test and subsequently testing positive for fentanyl.

In January 2021, then‑President Donald Trump commuted a three‑year federal sentence that Kapri was serving for falsifying documents used to purchase firearms; Kapri had served roughly half of that term. As a recording artist known as Kodak Black, he has sold more than 30 million singles, achieving notable chart success with tracks such as “Super Gremlin,” which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2022.

The current MDMA trafficking charge will be addressed in upcoming court proceedings, and the outcome will determine the next steps in Kapri’s ongoing legal challenges.
