Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has denied media reports suggesting he is lobbying to become director-general of the All Progressives Congress presidential campaign council ahead of the 2027 general Elections. In a statement released by his senior special assistant on public communications and social media, Lere Olayinka, Wike described the claims as false and said he has not discussed any role in the campaign structure with anyone.
The former Rivers State governor said his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid does not depend on holding an official position. “I do not need to be the DG or even a member of the Presidential Campaign Council of Mr President’s political party to contribute my quota by ensuring that he wins handsomely in Rivers State and the FCT,” Wike said. He added that his commitment to the president’s re-election remains firm and his priority is to continue advancing the administration’s agenda.
Wike disclosed that he is currently outside Nigeria on a brief break after spending more than 30 days commissioning projects, flagging off new ones and inspecting ongoing works across the territory. He said he would return to resume his duties in line with the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda and would also work to strengthen Tinubu’s electoral prospects in Rivers State and the FCT.
“My support for President Tinubu is not tied to holding any position in the campaign council. My focus is to ensure that Mr President records a strong electoral victory in Rivers State and the FCT,” Wike said. The minister’s statement underscores his alignment with the ruling party’s national leadership despite his roots in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, and signals his intention to remain a key political mobiliser for the administration in the run-up to the next election cycle.
