Osun Election Lockdown: Police Impose Movement Ban, Bar Amotekun From Polling Stations

Police impose movement restriction across Osun for Saturday’s governorship election, ban Amotekun and non-state groups from polling units.

Police-5

The Nigeria Police Force has thrown a security cordon around Osun State ahead of Saturday’s governorship vote, ordering a total movement freeze from midnight Friday, 14th August 2026, until 6 p.m. Saturday, 15th August 2026. The directive, issued Friday by Force Public Relations Officer CSP Ani Iniedu, leaves no room for ambiguity: anyone not explicitly exempted by authorities must stay put.

The police message is blunt—citizens are to “comply fully with the restriction and cooperate with security personnel deployed across the State.” Only those with official clearance will be allowed to move during the window. It’s a familiar playbook for Nigerian elections, but this time the force is drawing a harder line on who gets to wear the badge of authority.

In a pointed reminder, the police reiterated their ban on Amotekun and other non-state security outfits from any election-related security duty. The statement is emphatic: only agencies recognized under the Nigerian Constitution and federal laws are permitted to work alongside the police during the election. Vigilante groups, local watchdogs, and any other unauthorized bodies are told to steer clear of polling units entirely.

The warning carries a sharp edge. These groups are instructed to “stay away from election-related security operations and refrain from any activity capable of intimidating voters, disrupting the electoral process or undermining public peace and security.” The message is clear: the state will not tolerate freelance enforcers at the ballot box.

For voters in Osun, the takeaway is simple—plan your day around the lockdown, and expect a heavy security presence as the state decides its next governor.
