Igwe Alexander Uzo Onyido, the traditional ruler of Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been displaced from his palace after days of torrential rainfall triggered severe flooding across the community.
The floodwaters submerged the monarch’s entire residence, including several exotic vehicles parked on the premises. The incident underscores a long-standing environmental crisis in Ogidi, where recurring floods and erosion have plagued sections of the old Awka-Onitsha Road for years. Economic activity in parts of Anambra State has been disrupted by the persistent downpours, which have also driven some residents to abandon their homes.
Governor Chukwuma Soludo previously pledged to address the infrastructure deficits in the area, but construction on the affected road section has yet to begin. The renewed flooding has reignited public frustration, with residents and social media users questioning the delay in implementing lasting solutions.
A social media user, Iyke Orji, alleged that Ogidi residents contributed approximately N50 million during a recent election period, arguing the funds could have been directed toward flood mitigation. The claim has not been independently verified and remains an assertion by the commentator.
As of the time of this report, the whereabouts of the traditional ruler following his evacuation were not immediately known. The situation has amplified calls for sustainable drainage systems, erosion control measures, and comprehensive road rehabilitation in Ogidi and other flood-prone communities across the state.
