Jane Doe 4 Joins Lawsuit Against xAI Over Grok CSAM

A fourth plaintiff has joined a federal lawsuit accusing Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, of enabling the creation of child sexual abuse material through its chatbot, Grok. The woman, identified in court filings as Jane Doe 4, alleges her stepfather used the tool to alter a photograph taken when she was 11 years old, generating more than 7,000 explicit images of her.

The amended complaint, first reported by The Washington Post, details that the stepfather died by suicide two days after law enforcement discovered the images during a raid. “Limitless access to these tools is spreading so quickly,” Jane Doe 4 said in a statement. “It is taking everyday life and turning it into child sexual abuse.”

She joins three Tennessee teenagers who filed the original suit earlier this year. They allege xAI failed to implement basic safeguards to prevent Grok from being used to create sexualized images of real people, including minors. The plaintiffs point to a surge of such content on X, the social media platform also owned by Musk, where millions of Grok-generated explicit images reportedly circulated earlier this year.

The lawsuit seeks class-action status, arguing that xAI’s lack of adequate content moderation and safety controls constitutes negligence and poses an ongoing threat to children. Legal representatives for the plaintiffs say the case highlights a critical gap in accountability for generative AI systems capable of producing photorealistic abusive material.

xAI has not publicly responded to the specific allegations. TechCrunch has reached out to the company for comment.

The case arrives amid intensifying global scrutiny of AI safety standards and the responsibility of tech firms to prevent misuse of powerful generative tools. Lawmakers in the United States and Europe are advancing legislation that would mandate stricter oversight of AI-generated content, particularly material depicting minors.
