Nigerian defender Emmanuel Ugwu has completed a transfer from Nigeria Premier Football League side Bendel Insurance to Maltese club Mosta FC, ending his spell with the Benin City-based outfit.

The move was confirmed following Ugwu’s farewell message to the club’s supporters, in which he reflected on his time with the team known as the Benin Arsenals. The 24-year-old made 46 appearances for Bendel Insurance after joining the club, establishing himself as a regular in the defence.

“Can a city, a dressing room, and a team become your home? Yes. That’s what Benin City was for me. That’s what Bendel Insurance was for me,” Ugwu wrote in his departure statement. He credited his teammates and the club captain for helping him settle quickly, describing the environment as something that “can’t be described in words. It has to be experienced.”

Ugwu emphasized his commitment during his tenure, stating he gave his all in every minute played and every training session. His exit marks another instance of Nigerian league talent moving to European football, with Malta’s top flight becoming an increasingly common destination for NPFL graduates.

Mosta FC, who compete in the Maltese Premier League, will hope the defender’s experience in West African football adds depth to their backline for the upcoming season. For Bendel Insurance, the departure creates a vacancy in central defence as they prepare for their next NPFL campaign.

The transfer follows a pattern of Nigerian clubs developing players who later attract interest from lower-tier European leagues, providing both exposure for the athletes and potential revenue streams for the domestic sides. Ugwu’s next challenge begins in the Mediterranean, where he will aim to replicate the consistency that earned him the move.
