Brazilian midfielder Ederson has revealed he successfully completed a medical examination with Manchester United before the Premier League club unexpectedly withdrew from a proposed transfer agreement. The 24-year-old, who has spent the past four seasons at Atalanta, said the medical assessments were satisfactory but the English side abandoned the deal without providing an explanation to him or his representatives.
Manchester United had reached a £35 million agreement with the Serie A club for the player’s services during the summer transfer window. The medical was conducted while Ederson was on international duty at the FIFA World Cup. Despite the advanced stage of negotiations, the transfer collapsed, leaving the midfielder uncertain about the reasons behind the decision.
In a recent media interaction, Ederson refuted suggestions that he had failed the medical. “I honestly don’t know what transpired,” he said. “The medical assessments were satisfactory, but I am uncertain about what occurred.” He added that interest from other English clubs existed, but he ultimately chose to remain in Bergamo.
Ederson signed a contract extension with Atalanta, citing the strong relationship he has built with the club since his arrival. “I have been with Atalanta for four years and have consistently played,” he explained. “My strong relationship with the club persuaded me to stay and sign a new contract. I am very pleased to continue with Atalanta, and I sincerely appreciate the club and Luca Percassi. They reached out to me multiple times, and I felt their support.”
The midfielder expressed gratitude to the Atalanta supporters for their unwavering backing and pledged to improve his performances. “Despite interest from other clubs, after everything that transpired, I believed it was best to remain with those who genuinely wanted me, which has always been Atalanta. I was delighted to wear the jersey that has brought me so much happiness.”
Atalanta’s director, Cristiano Giuntoli, described the player as feeling like a new acquisition for the squad. Ederson responded by emphasizing his established place within the team. “I am grateful to the fans; they are always so passionate and stand by you through both good and challenging times,” he said. “We won the Europa League and achieved significant results; they know me well. I do not consider myself a new signing; I have always been an Atalanta player.”
The Europa League triumph, secured last season, stands as a highlight of Ederson’s tenure in Italy. His decision to stay reinforces Atalanta’s midfield stability as they prepare for continued domestic and European campaigns. For Manchester United, the failed pursuit adds to a pattern of summer transfer complications, though the club has not publicly commented on the specific reasons for withdrawing from the deal.
