Patrick Vieira Appointed Senegal Head Coach After World Cup Exit

The Senegalese Football Federation has appointed Patrick Vieira as head coach of the men’s national team, marking a significant return for the former Arsenal captain to his country of birth. Vieira succeeds Pape Thiaw following Senegal’s early exit from recent international competition.

The appointment represents a full-circle moment for the 50-year-old, who was born in Dakar on 23 June 1976 and lived in Senegal until relocating to France at age eight. Despite representing France across a decorated international career that yielded 107 caps, a 1998 World Cup triumph and the Euro 2000 title, Vieira has consistently acknowledged his Senegalese heritage.

“My education, my family, the Senegalese culture, the African culture, that is all part of me,” Vieira told The Athletic in a previous interview.

The federation described the hire as a strategic decision aligned with its long-term sporting ambitions, emphasising the desire to establish a high-level technical structure. For Vieira, the role marks his first venture into international management after a coaching career spanning Major League Soccer, Ligue 1, the Premier League, and Serie A.

Vieira’s playing resume ranks among the most distinguished in modern football. After emerging at Cannes, where he captained the side as a teenager, he joined Arsenal in 1996 and spent nine seasons as the engine of Arsène Wenger’s midfield. He lifted three Premier League trophies and four FA Cups, famously leading the 2003-04 “Invincibles” through an unbeaten league campaign. Subsequent spells at Juventus, Inter Milan and Manchester City added further domestic honours, including four consecutive Serie A titles in Italy.

His transition to management began in Manchester City’s academy system before taking charge of New York City FC in 2016. Stints at Nice, Crystal Palace — where he guided the club to an FA Cup semi-final — Strasbourg and most recently Genoa followed, building a reputation for tactical clarity and player development.

Vieira now assumes responsibility for the Teranga Lions with immediate focus on the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the longer trajectory toward the 2030 World Cup. His appointment signals Senegal’s intent to blend elite European experience with deep cultural connection as they pursue continental and global objectives.
