The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed that Peter Nweke, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, was killed in the Ezza North Local Government Area during Saturday’s election. Police Public Relations Officer SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya told reporters in Abakaliki on Sunday that the victim was beaten to death by suspected thugs. She added that the District Police Officer and his team attempted to rescue him, but doctors at the hospital declared him dead upon arrival.

A PDP chieftain and local resident, Innocent Nomeh, said the chairman had been threatened by thugs before his murder. “He was threatened, then tracked and taken to an isolated area where they killed him,” Nomeh said. “It is tragic that such a young man died because of an election. I urge the security agencies to deepen their investigations and bring those responsible to justice.”
