The Governing Council of the University of Ilorin has approved the appointment of Mr. Mansur Alfanla as the university’s Registrar‑designate. Alfanla, who is currently a Deputy Registrar and Secretary of the institution’s Postgraduate School, will succeed the incumbent Registrar, Dr. Fola Olowoleni, when her tenure ends in April. The appointment was highlighted in the council’s 183rd meeting on Thursday, 23 March 2023, presided over by Acting Chairman Professor Saburi A. Adesanya. The decision followed a rigorous review of the Selection Committee’s reports, which evaluated the eligibility of shortlisted candidates for the soon‑to‑be‑vacant position.

Mr. Alfanla will become the seventh Registrar and Secretary to the Governing Council, and only the third officeholder to rise through the university’s administrative ranks to reach this pinnacle. An indigene of Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State, he was born on 28 August 1970 in Ilorin. He attended Ansarul Islam Primary School in Ilorin, earning his primary education certificate, and later Omupo Grammar School, where he obtained his West African School Certificate in 1988. He pursued a Bachelor of Arts (Combined Honours) in English/Mass Communication at Bayero University, Kano, graduating in 1995. He returned to the University of Ilorin for a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) between 2006 and 2010, attended the Nigerian Law School in Abuja, and was called to the Bar in 2012. He completed a Master’s degree in Law in 2016.

After completing his mandatory National Youth Service Corps program at Girls Commercial School, Nanka, Anambra State (1995‑1996), Alfanla joined the University of Ilorin as an Administrative Assistant in 1998 during the tenure of the 6th Vice‑Chancellor, Professor Shuaibu Oba AbdulRaheem. He was promoted to Administrative Officer in 2001, Assistant Registrar in 2005, Senior Assistant Registrar in 2009, Principal Assistant Registrar in 2013, and Deputy Registrar in 2016. Over his 25‑year career, he has served in various capacities and on numerous committees, often as Chairman or Secretary.

Among his notable responsibilities, Alfanla acted as the university’s Admission Officer under two administrations—Professors Ishaq Olanrewaju Oloyede and Abdulganiyu Ambali—from 2009 to 2013, and later as Deputy Registrar for Academic Support Services. He is a seasoned unionist, having served as Secretary (2004‑2007) and Chairman (2007‑2015) of the University of Ilorin Chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SAANU), and as National Treasurer of the association (2015‑2016).

Alfanla is a member of several professional bodies, including the Association of Nigerian Universities Professional Administrators (ANUPA), the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM), and he is a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administrators of Nigeria (ICAN). Despite a demanding schedule, he has also contributed to community life as Secretary of the Ilorin Emirate Staff Association, University of Ilorin, and as Secretary of the University of Ilorin Muslim Community, serving as Imam of the Senior Staff Quarters’ Mosque from 2009 to 2021. Until his new appointment, he represented the University Congregation on the Governing Council.

Alfanla is happily married and blessed with children.
