The Chairman of the National Population Commission, Nasir Kwarra, has appealed to Nigerians to make themselves available for counting during the forthcoming population and housing census, scheduled for May 3–7, 2023. He emphasized that, beyond being a national event, the census will provide the government and other agencies with accurate data essential for planning and development. Kwarra noted that substantial resources and effort have been invested to ensure the exercise is credible and successful.

Speaking through his Special Assistant, Husaini Isiyaku, at a workshop for social media influencers and bloggers in Abuja on Saturday, Kwarra stressed that participation is a civic duty. “Census is a national event and is the responsibility of every citizen to participate by presenting themselves to be counted,” he said. He added that the commission will need the support of all stakeholders to deliver reliable data for sustainable development planning.

Kwarra highlighted the commission’s extensive preparation, drawing on its institutional experience from two previous censuses and a pool of tested professionals. “We are delivering a truly digital and scientific census that will generate data for planning within the context of our present realities,” he explained. The commission has completed enumeration area demarcation, conducted two pre‑tests and a trial census, and trained facilitators, with other preparatory activities ongoing.

He also noted that the commission has developed a Census Strategic Plan and Implementation Strategy, outlining activities for the pre‑census, actual census, and post‑census stages. These efforts, he said, lay the groundwork for a successful census implemented according to best practices.
