At least 30 people were injured after a passenger train derailed in the southern Netherlands on Tuesday, emergency services said. The double‑decker intercity train collided with construction equipment on the line near the village of Voorschoten, between The Hague and Amsterdam, at around 3:30 am (01:30 GMT). The impact caused a front carriage to derail and plunge into a field, a second carriage to lie on its side, a third to remain upright, and a fourth to catch fire, according to the ANP news agency. Approximately 60 passengers were on board at the time.

Hollands Midden emergency services reported that the seriously injured were taken to hospital, while 11 people were accommodated in the homes of nearby residents. Ambulance crews, including a trauma helicopter, rushed to the scene to transport the most severely hurt passengers. The exact severity of the injuries was not immediately known.

A witness told local Omroep West television news, “We heard a loud bang and suddenly the lights went out. We couldn’t initially get out of the train because there was no electricity.” The witness appeared shocked by the incident. Specialists are now working to secure the train and clear the line.
