Chelsea Urgently Need to Address Midfield Deficiencies, Says Rio Ferdinand

In a recent statement, former Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has openly advised Chelsea Football Club to make some necessary signings in the midfield department in order to restore balance to their squad.

Ferdinand believes that following the departure of key midfielders such as Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, and Mateo Kovacic, Chelsea’s current squad lacks depth and variety in midfield.

Reflecting on Chelsea’s recent transfer activity, which saw the departure of players like Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, Kai Havertz, and others, Ferdinand expressed concern about the lack of midfield options at the club.

“If you look at Chelsea’s midfield, Jorginho left last season, Kante and Kovacic have also departed, and both Mount and Loftus-Cheek are on their way out,” explained Ferdinand during an interview with the FIVE YouTube channel.

“That’s five midfielders, and two or three of them were regular starters. As of now, there is a clear void in the midfield at Chelsea,” he continued.

Ferdinand further stated that while Chelsea boasts an abundance of attacking talent in their wide areas, the squad’s lack of equilibrium is evident. In his opinion, what the team really needs are some solid midfield additions.

“Currently, they have around eight or nine attacking players, but there is an imbalance in the squad. They are desperately in need of quality midfielders,” Ferdinand explained.

Moreover, he highlighted the importance of finding a suitable partner for Enzo Fernandez, whom Chelsea had acquired for a hefty £100m transfer fee.

“It will be interesting to see how Chelsea address this issue, because alongside Enzo, they need someone who can complement and enhance his abilities,” Ferdinand concluded.
