Electoral Process: INEC seeks more media support

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC says it will welcome contributions and suggestions that will assist the commission to improve on the conduct of elections in the country.

The INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu stated this at the review meeting with media executives on the conduct of the 2023 General Election in Nigeria.

β€œThere is s long standing partnership between the commission and the media which we appreciated.”

The INEC chairman noted some of the areas to share the experience on to include, accreditation of media organisations, access for journalists to voting and collation locations on election day, conduct of pre-election activities by the commission, logistics, Security, the role of the technology in voter accreditation and the result management among others.

β€œWe are also convinced that as citizens, you should be part of the discussions for overall improvement of our electoral process based on your field observation,β€œ Yakubu added.

The President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Mr. Chris Isiguzo assured him that the media would continue to support the commission in the electoral processes.

He remarked that the media played a crucial role in upholding the pillars of democracy. transparency, accountability and right to information.
