Tribunal sacks Kano NNPP Rep. over failure to resign 30 days before election

The National and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Kano State has nullified the election of Yusuf Datti, House of Representatives member representing Kura/Madobi/Garin Malam Federal constituency on the platform of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP.

Justice Flora Ngozi-Azinge, leader of the three-man panel, voided Mr Yusuf’s election over his failure to resign from his lecturing job at Bayero University, Kano, 30 days before the election.

Mrs Ngozi-Azinge also held that the lawmaker could not convince the tribunal of his NNPP membership beyond reasonable doubts.

She ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to set aside the certificate of return that had previously been issued to Mr Datti and declare Musa Ilyasu Kwankwaso of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the rightful winner of the election.

DAILY NIGERIAN recalls that Mr Kwankwaso secured the second-highest number of votes during the election held on February 25, 2023.
