Killing of Adeola’s Aide: Police Report Contradicts Senator’s Claims

The Nigerian Army has been cleared of any involvement in the killing of Senator Olamilekan Adeola’s aide, Adeniyi Sanni, according to police investigations. Sanni was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Saturday, August 5, 2023.

Timeline of Events

After Sanni contacted his wife, informing her that he was stopped at a military checkpoint, he went missing. His body was later discovered by the roadside in Oshodi, Lagos, with gunshot wounds.

Senator Adeola, devastated by the loss of his aide, accused the Nigerian Army of murdering Sanni and stealing his car. In a statement through his media aide, Kayode Odunaro, he alleged that soldiers from the 9 Brigade, Ikeja Cantonment were responsible for the crime. He further claimed that soldiers from the same checkpoint had been involved in another killing and armed robbery incident.

Army Denies Allegations

The Nigerian Army, however, denied any involvement in the killing and robbery incidents. They announced that they were working with the police to identify the criminals who were impersonating soldiers.

The EndSARS Controversy

Adeola’s allegations against the Nigerian Army sparked memories of the alleged massacre during the EndSARS protest at the Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020. Many Nigerian youths believed that soldiers had shot unarmed protesters during the demonstration, and they saw Adeola’s accusations as further proof.

Suspects Arrested

Despite Adeola’s firm belief, the suspects behind Sanni’s murder have been apprehended. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, confirmed that the arrested individuals were not members of the Nigerian Army. The suspects, identified as Fred Azeez Okunnu, Lucky Idudu Michael, and Adedigba Segun, confessed to the crime.

The eldest suspect, Okunnu, disclosed that the incident took place in Ojodu Berger, where the victim’s car was stopped. When Sanni became suspicious of their intentions and attempted to raise the alarm, Okunnu shot him, and Michael fired additional shots. They then drove off with the victim still alive before eventually abandoning him by the roadside.

Adeola’s Response

When contacted for comment following the arrest of the suspects, Senator Adeola’s media aide, Odunaro, stated that the Senator would respond officially once he had all the information at his disposal.

It is essential to await further developments in the investigation conducted by the security agencies. The recovery of military items and the trans-national revelation will shed more light on the circumstances surrounding Sanni’s death. The Senator appreciates the efforts of the police and the media in this matter.

As the investigation continues, it is vital to separate fact from speculation. The Nigerian Army has been cleared of any involvement, and it is crucial to allow justice to take its course.
