A young woman named Ramatu Adamu, who was convicted and serving an 18-month sentence for the theft of a pot and a wrapper, has been granted a pardon by the Adamawa Jail Delivery Committee. This committee was established with the aim of decongesting prisons in the state.
Ramatu, who was charged with ‘theft in a dwelling house’, was discharged by the Adamawa Jail Delivery Committee on Thursday. Her conviction took place on August 11, with the Chief Magistrate Court in Numan sentencing her to one and a half years for stealing the pot, wrapper, and a cooler.
At the time of her release, Ramatu was serving her sentence at the Numan Security Custodial Centre, where the committee paid a visit.
During her appearance before the committee, headed by Chief Judge Justice Hapsat Abdulrahaman, Ramatu admitted to committing the offense for which she was convicted. She stated that she had traveled from Shelleng to visit her sister in Numan, and it was during this visit that she took the items in question.
In response to her plea, the Jail Recovery Committee discharged Ramatu with a warning against any future criminal activities. Additionally, the Chief Judge presented her with a cash gift of N10,000 to support her in continuing her food-selling business.
