Paul Scholes Points Finger at Onana for Man Utd’s Defensive Woes in UCL Draw

Manchester United’s former midfielder and renowned football pundit, Paul Scholes, did not mince words as he singled out Andre Onana for the three goals conceded in the exhilarating 3-3 deadlock with Galatasaray during the midweek Champions League showdown.

The Red Devils seemed to command the game, surging ahead with a two-goal cushion spearheaded by Alejandro Garnacho and the exceptional Bruno Fernandes. However, their dominance was short-lived, courtesy of a stunning free-kick by Hakim Ziyech that caught Onana off-guard, leaving the net rippling.

Just when Scott McTominay extended Man Utd’s lead to 3-1, Onana faltered again, misreading another powerful Ziyech free-kick, allowing Galatasaray to mount a dramatic comeback, with Kerem Akturkoglu delivering a thunderous strike to restore parity.

Reflecting on the game in an interview with TNT Sports, Scholes highlighted, “He makes people nervous, he makes the defence nervous, he makes the whole team nervous. He makes simple saves look really, really difficult.”

He continued, “Beaten at the near post [for Galatasaray’s third]. We’ll probably have goalkeeper experts who will know more about this than us, but again I don’t think he should be beaten at the near post.”

“His positioning is poor. For me, all three goals are down to him. His technique looks awkward,” Scholes concluded with palpable concern for Man Utd’s defensive frailty.
