INEC sets stage for Taraba bye election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set the stage for the bye-election in the Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency in Taraba State, scheduled to take place on February 3, 2024. Following the passing of the elected member for the constituency, Isma’ila Yushau Maihanci, shortly after the 2023 general election, the bye-election has become necessary. As of now, six out of the eight aspirants vying for the position from various political parties are affiliated with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Although the leadership of INEC in the state was unavailable for comment on the level of preparation, some staff of the commission disclosed that preparations are in full swing. They indicated their readiness to provide an equitable platform for candidates emerging from the primaries. Ahead of the upcoming bye-election, the commission emphasized the importance of free, fair, and credible primaries, warning political parties against violating electoral laws. The staff expressed their commitment to ensuring a level playing field for all candidates and parties. Several PDP aspirants voiced their expectations for a fair primary, urging the state governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, and the party’s leadership not to unduly influence the candidate selection process. They cautioned against favoritism, emphasizing the need for the constituency’s residents to freely choose their candidate. The party’s spokesperson, Andetarang Iramae, affirmed the party’s readiness to conduct a transparent and impartial primary for all aspirants. As the bye-election draws nearer, all eyes are on the political landscape in Taraba State, with stakeholders eager to witness a democratic and inclusive electoral process.
