Nigeria Suspends 800% Increase in Airspace Charges Amid Economic Concerns
The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has put the brakes on its planned 800% increase in navigational charges, citing current economic challenges faced by Nigerians. The decision to suspend the hike was directed by Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, who emphasized the need for further consultation before implementing any changes.
According to a statement released on Monday, NAMA’s boss, Umar Farouk, highlighted the significant economic pressures faced by the aviation industry, which are exacerbated by global economic volatility, fuel price hikes, and currency instability. To address these challenges, Farouk outlined strategies for survival and growth, including operational efficiency, embracing innovation and technology, strengthening infrastructure, and fostering collaboration and partnerships.
The proposed increase in fees aimed to sustain NAMA’s operations and ensure the safety and efficiency of Nigeria’s airspace. The new unit rate for en-route services was set to increase to ₦18,000 from ₦2,000 per flight, while the minimum charge for terminal navigation services was to rise to ₦54,000 from ₦6,000 per flight, effective September 1, 2024.
