Nigeria’s Sports Federations Face Reforms After Disappointing Paris 2024 Olympics

Nigerian Sports Minister Calls for Reforms Following Olympics Disappointment

Lagos, Nigeria – The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, has called for reforms to enhance the effectiveness of Nigeria’s sports federations following the country’s disappointing performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Team Nigeria failed to secure any medals at the Olympics, despite significant financial investment of N12 billion approved by President Bola Tinubu. This disappointing outcome has prompted the Minister to emphasize the need for reforms to prevent a similar performance in the future.

Enoh made the call on his official X account, highlighting the importance of reviewing the electoral process for the country’s sports federations. “As we go back home, we must do everything to prevent future occurrence of the Paris disaster, and if this will entail the review of how people are elected to lead our sporting federations, it will be done,” the Minister said.

The Minister further emphasized the need to scrutinize what motivates individuals vying to run the federations, with a focus on getting only the best hands in leadership positions. “The elections for the federations are by the corner, and it will be a perfect platform to get those who are most eligible to lead the various sports federations,” he said.

Enoh believes that these reforms will pave the way for improved global performance, as Team Nigeria strives to redeem its image in international sports competitions. The Minister has emphasized that the current elections for the federations present a timely opportunity to set high standards and get the best leadership in place.

With a focus on enhanced leadership and effectiveness, these reforms are expected to have a positive impact on Nigeria’s sports federations and overall performance in the future.
