Brian Flores Responds to Tua Tagovailoa’s Criticism, Focused on Vikings

Former NFL Coach Brian Flores Reacts to Criticism from Ex-Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa

In a recent interview, former Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa spoke candidly about his experience playing under coach Brian Flores, criticizing his coaching style and saying it affected his confidence. Flores, now the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, has responded to the comments, admitting that they stung but vowing to use them as an opportunity for growth.

Tagovailoa, who signed a new four-year, $212.4 million deal with the Dolphins, told “The Dan Le Batard Show” that Flores’ coaching style was toxic and made him feel like he didn’t belong in the league. He recalled waking up every morning to Flores telling him he was terrible at his job and that he shouldn’t be there. Tagovailoa also compared the experience to being told by someone that you’re not good enough, saying it can be damaging to one’s self-esteem.

Flores, who spent three seasons as the Dolphins’ head coach before being replaced by Mike McDaniel, acknowledged that Tagovailoa’s comments were difficult to hear. However, he chose to focus on the positive, saying he’s genuinely happy for Tagovailoa’s success and wishes him nothing but the best. Flores also emphasized his commitment to growing from the experience and creating a positive environment where players feel valued and supported.

The differences between Flores and Tagovailoa’s experiences under their respective coaches are stark. Tagovailoa has thrived under McDaniel, throwing for a career-high 4,624 yards and 29 touchdowns last season. Flores, on the other hand, has struggled to find consistency as a head coach, with his only stint in the role being with the Dolphins.

Despite the criticism, Flores remains focused on his new role with the Vikings, saying he’s more committed than ever to his work. As he navigates this new chapter, Flores will likely draw on his experiences as a player and coach to continue growing and improving.
