Uruguayan Football Mourns the Loss of 27-Year-Old Player Juan Izquierdo

Uruguayan football is in shock after 27-year-old player Juan Izquierdo passed away on Tuesday, August 27, at a hospital in Brazil. The defender had collapsed during a Copa Libertadores match five days earlier and had been hospitalized since last Thursday, August 22.

In a statement, Sao Paulo’s Hospital Albert Einstein confirmed that Izquierdo’s death was due to “cardiorespiratory arrest associated with his cardiac arrhythmia.” The news has sent shockwaves throughout the football community, with his club Nacional and former clubs expressing their “deep pain” and extending their sympathies to his family.

Izquierdo’s career began in 2018 at local club Cerro, before he caught the attention of Mexico’s San LuĂs in 2021. Although he was offered a contract, he decided to return home and continued to play for local Liverpool, where he was one of the team’s best players in their historic campaign that led to a Uruguayan league title in 2023.

The tragedy has also had a significant impact on the football leagues in Uruguay, with both the first and second divisions being postponed last weekend.

Izquierdo is survived by his wife and two children. His death serves as a poignant reminder of the risks and challenges faced by professional footballers, and the devastating impact it can have on their loved ones.
