Eguavoen Defends Ndah’s Debut in Super Eagles’ AFCON Qualifier Win

Nigeria’s Super Eagles Secure 3-0 Win in AFCON Qualifier, Coach Defends Tactical Move

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have made a strong start to their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, defeating Benin Republic 3-0 in their opening match. The win, which was played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, was made possible thanks to goals from Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen.

However, the match was not without its tactical twists. Caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen was forced to make a substitution in the 60th minute, bringing on Orlando Pirates’ Olisa Ndah to partner William Troost-Ekong in defense. The decision was met with some surprise, given that Ndah was not a regular starter for the team.

When asked about his decision to bring in Ndah, Eguavoen explained that the player was not new to the team’s setup. “Ndah was here for the AFCON in Cameroon, so we have worked with him before now and there is that synergy,” he said. “Whoever comes in, we want to give specific instructions, just go out and play.”

Eguavoen also emphasized the importance of understanding and communication within the team. “Whoever comes in, there is an understanding. We have been training for one week, and we know what we want to achieve,” he said.

The win is a significant boost for the Super Eagles, who are looking to regain their status as one of the top teams in African football. With the team’s next match scheduled for later this month, Eguavoen will be looking to build on this momentum and continue to develop his squad.

In the meantime, the Super Eagles will be focused on their next challenge, which will come in the form of a tough match against a strong opponent. With their sights set on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the team will be looking to continue their winning streak and make a strong impression on the international stage.
