Barcelona Keep Gerard Martin Despite Premier League Interest

Barcelona have opted to retain promising defender Gerard Martín despite reported interest from Premier League sides Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bournemouth, according to Spanish outlet SPORT. The 23-year-old left-back, who made his first-team breakthrough last season, contributed one goal and six assists across 42 matches during Barcelona’s domestic treble-winning campaign under manager Hansi Flick.

Martín’s versatility became evident during pre-season preparations, where he featured at center-back in a friendly against FC Seoul. His development has accelerated since recovering from a hand injury, with the club now preparing him for an expanded role. However, formal registration as a first-team player remains pending, rendering him ineligible for reserve team participation.

The Spaniard’s growing influence was highlighted in key moments last term, including an assist in Barcelona’s Copa del Rey extra-time victory over rivals Real Madrid. He also delivered two crucial assists during the dramatic Champions League semi-final second leg against Inter Milan, where Barcelona fell 4-3 on the night (7-6 on aggregate) despite holding a late 6-5 lead.

As Barcelona begin their La Liga title defense, pre-season form suggests continued momentum. Following a 3-1 victory over Vissel Kobe in Japan and a 7-3 thrashing of FC Seoul in South Korea—with Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal each scoring twice—the team faces Daegu FC on August 4 to conclude their Asian tour. League action resumes August 19 at Mallorca, followed by away fixtures against Levante and Rayo Vallecano.

Martín’s retention underscores Barcelona’s strategy of integrating youth into a squad rebuilding phase, balancing immediate competitive demands with long-term planning. His ability to operate across defensive positions could prove vital as the club navigates multiple competitions in the upcoming season.
