Eritrea Takes Steps to Preserve Cultural Heritage and National Identity
In a bid to promote cultural awareness and preserve national identity, the Commission of Culture and Sports in Eritrea organized a seminar on cultural heritage and identity for over 150 members of traditional dance and music groups from the Southern Region. The event, held on August 18 in Asmara, brought together experts and enthusiasts to discuss the significance of cultural heritage in shaping the country’s identity.
Dr. Tsegay Medin, head of Archaeological Heritage Research at the Commission, delivered a detailed briefing on the meaning and significance of culture, highlighting its tangible and intangible aspects. He emphasized the crucial role of heritage in consolidating national identity, citing archaeological findings from prehistoric and historic eras, including the period of kingdoms and colonialism, as significant contributors to nurturing national identity.
The Commission’s efforts in research, conservation, and transmission of cultural heritage were also highlighted during the seminar. However, Dr. Tsegay noted that ongoing damage and destruction of heritage sites remain major challenges. Participants engaged in extensive discussions, adopting several recommendations aimed at addressing these challenges. Key among these were intensifying efforts to repatriate heritage items held abroad and addressing the damage caused to ancient buildings under the pretext of renovation.
Lt. Col. Samuel Tsegay, head of Administration and Finance at the Commission, and Mr. Abraham Yohannes, Director General of Culture and Sports in the Southern Region, underscored the significance of the seminar, calling for its continuation. The event marked a crucial step in Eritrea’s efforts to preserve its cultural heritage and promote national identity, recognizing the importance of cultural awareness in shaping the country’s future.
