'You're the greatest betrayer' - PDP group fires back at Wike

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, warned Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State against trying to bring former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi back into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Wike made the remark during a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, responding to comments Governor Mohammed made in an interview with Channels Television. As chair of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Mohammed had said the party was considering both Peter Obi and former President Goodluck Jonathan as possible candidates for its 2027 presidential ticket.

Wike cautioned that such a move could be detrimental to the party. He noted that Obi had previously described the PDP as “rotten” and questioned why the party would now entertain his candidacy. The warning comes amid speculation about the PDP’s strategy for the 2027 general elections, as the party explores various options to improve its chances of winning the presidency.

Governor Mohammed’s remarks had sparked interest in the prospect of Obi’s return to the PDP, but Wike’s statement has cast doubt on that possibility. In recent years the PDP has faced internal conflicts and stiff competition from other parties, prompting its leadership to rebuild and reposition the organization ahead of the 2027 elections. Considering high‑profile figures like Obi and Jonathan is part of this effort.

Wike’s warning underscores the complexities and sensitivities involved in the PDP’s decision‑making process. As the party balances the interests and aspirations of its diverse stakeholders while selecting a presidential ticket, the outcome will be closely watched for its potential impact on the PDP’s fortunes and the broader Nigerian political landscape.
