The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) convened an emergency meeting in Lagos on Thursday, bringing together the party’s national executives from across the country. Held behind closed doors at the NAGAFF Headquarters in Apapa, the session was chaired by the party’s Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, alongside National Chairman Dr. Agbo Major and Secretary General Dr. Oginni Olaposi. The meeting ran from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and addressed urgent nationwide issues, foremost among them the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) delay in uploading the NNPP’s new national executives. This postponement has hampered the party’s ability to participate fully in elections.
Dr. Aniebonam noted that the NNPP has written to INEC repeatedly, demanding that elections be halted until the party’s registration issues are resolved, in order to avoid potential litigations that could affect Nigeria’s electoral process. He warned that INEC’s delay amounts to a constitutional abuse of Nigerians’ rights to participate in elections. Despite court directives, INEC has not yet displayed the correct NNPP logo nor recognized the party’s new leadership, prompting the NNPP to insist that all electoral activities nationwide be suspended until the matter is settled.
Other agenda items included the unauthorized use of the NNPP name by expelled members and the approaches of presidential aspirants seeking to run on the party’s platform for the 2027 election. Dr. Aniebonam affirmed that the NNPP will field its own candidate in 2027 and is open to collaborating with like‑minded parties that support its vision. However, the party will not allocate its ticket to a single aspirant; all candidates must compete in the party’s mandatory primaries.
The meeting also launched plans for a nationwide membership drive, set to begin shortly, aimed at strengthening the party’s presence and preparing it for upcoming elections. With the 2027 election on the horizon, the NNPP is working to resolve internal challenges and position itself for success. The outcomes of this meeting and the party’s subsequent actions will be closely monitored as Nigeria’s electoral landscape continues to evolve.
