The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, has extended his congratulations to Nigeria’s President-elect, Bola Tinubu, following his victory in the 2023 presidential election. Sunak shared this message in a tweet on Wednesday night, expressing his eagerness to collaborate with Tinubu to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

In his tweet, Sunak emphasized the enduring strength of the UK-Nigeria relationship. He stated, “Congratulations to @officialABAT on his victory in Nigeria.” He further expressed his anticipation for working together to enhance security and trade ties, which would create opportunities for businesses and foster prosperity in both countries.

The announcement of Tinubu’s victory was made in the early hours of Wednesday, March 1, by Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission. Tinubu emerged as the winner of a closely contested election held the previous Saturday. The contest saw Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and Peter Obi of the Labour Party finishing in second and third place, respectively, with each candidate winning in 12 states, similar to Tinubu.
