The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has issued a warning to political leaders and actors against making provocative and unguarded statements that could lead the country into unnecessary conflict and anarchy. The council emphasized that while reckless remarks from inconsequential individuals may be easily overlooked, the same cannot be said for statements made by political and religious leaders. This warning was conveyed in a statement signed by the Deputy Secretary General, Prof. Salisu Shehu, and the Director of Administration, Zubairu Usman-Ugwu, which was made available to newsmen on Wednesday.
In the statement, the NSCIA highlighted the importance of patriotic and well-meaning Nigerian leaders supporting a steadfast adherence to processes and procedures during the ongoing electoral process. The council cautioned that any inclination towards unprocedural decisions or actions at this critical time could incite anarchy, which would ultimately have negative consequences for the nation.
Furthermore, the NSCIA urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain focused and committed to its responsibilities, ensuring that the electoral process reaches a logical conclusion. The statement concluded by encouraging all Nigerians, particularly Muslims, to maintain calm and remain prayerful, regardless of provocations from certain quarters. The council expressed a hope that Almighty Allah would keep the country stable and peaceful.
