The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has identified human error and overspeeding as the primary causes of the recent derailment of the Abuja–Kaduna train. According to Managing Director Kayode Opeifa, the incident occurred on August 26 when the train, carrying 618 passengers from Abuja to Kaduna, left the tracks and several coaches tumbled. No fatalities were reported, but six people sustained injuries, as confirmed by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau.
Following the accident, the NRC conducted an internal investigation and accepted the recommendations of the investigative team. The investigation revealed that the train was traveling at excessive speed and that the operator misapplied the emergency braking system, both of which contributed to the derailment. The corporation is now awaiting reports from the ministerial committee and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau before making final decisions.
Opeifa emphasized that safety remains the NRC’s top priority and that the corporation is committed to restoring public confidence in rail services. corrective measures are already being implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future. The NRC has reached out to 512 passengers who were on board, while efforts continue to contact the remaining 71 passengers who are currently unreachable due to non‑responsiveness, incorrect contact information, or unavailability. Of the 22 passengers who sustained injuries, all are at different stages of recovery.
The NRC’s investigation and response underscore the importance of prioritizing safety in the rail industry. As the corporation moves forward, it will be crucial to enforce measures that prevent overspeeding and ensure the proper application of emergency braking systems. The outcomes of the ministerial committee’s and the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau’s reports will be closely watched, as they will provide further insight into the incident and inform future safety protocols.
