The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has voiced strong displeasure over Dangote Refinery’s recent decision to terminate the employment of all Nigerian workers. NUPENG argues that this action reflects the character of the refinery’s president, Aliko Dangote. In an interview with Media Talk Africa, NUPENG National President Prince Williams Akporeha said that Dangote’s true nature has now been revealed to Nigerians.

The termination follows a confirmation by Festus Osifo, president of the Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), that the refinery dismissed its Nigerian employees because of their union membership. Akporeha emphasized that Dangote’s actions are a direct reflection of his personality, suggesting that the decision could have significant implications for both the workers and the broader industry.

Dangote Refinery’s move has raised concerns about labor practices and union membership within Nigeria’s petroleum sector. The decision may prompt further discussion and potential action from unions, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders. Given the refinery’s pivotal role in the country’s oil and gas industry, the situation is likely to attract increased scrutiny of labor practices and union‑employer relations.

NUPENG’s reaction underscores the need for constructive dialogue among employers, unions, and regulators to address labor‑related issues and promote a stable working environment. As the story develops, monitoring stakeholder responses and the potential impact on the industry will be essential.
