The Zamfara State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Presidency of criticizing former President Goodluck Jonathan in order to distract from the current administration’s shortcomings. In a statement issued in Gusau, state chairman Hon. Jamilu Jibo Magayaki said the criticism reflects anxiety over the opposition’s growing strength as the 2027 general elections approach.
Magayaki noted that many Nigerians still remember Jonathan’s tenure for its relative peace, democratic governance and economic stability. He questioned why the mere suggestion of Jonathan’s possible return in 2027 would unsettle the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if his record were truly poor. According to Magayaki, the current administration has failed to address pressing issues such as hardship, insecurity, hunger, inflation and economic decline.
The PDP chairman argued that the ruling party’s frequent references to Jonathan reveal its inability to defend its own record after more than two years in power. He expressed confidence that Nigerians will vote the PDP back into power in 2027, citing the party’s past achievements and the current government’s failures.
The accusation comes as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections, with the PDP seeking to regain power after losing to the APC in the previous contest. The criticism underscores the ongoing political tensions, as both parties engage in a war of words over their records and policies. As the election season draws nearer, political friction is likely to intensify, with each side striving to sway public opinion. The outcome will depend on factors such as the current administration’s performance, the opposition’s strength, and each party’s ability to convince voters of its vision for the country’s future.
