The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi while addressing journalists in Abuja on Friday. Akume questioned Obi’s ability to rescue Nigeria, citing his record as governor of Anambra state. He argued that Obi’s failure to manage Anambra effectively raises doubts about his capacity to lead the entire country, stating, “If Peter Obi could not rescue Anambra, he’s talking of rescuing the 36 states and Abuja.” Akume also referred to other unnamed individuals who have failed to deliver in their respective states.
Akume expressed support for President Bola Tinubu, highlighting the president’s ability to maintain peace and unity among Nigeria’s diverse religious groups. He noted that Tinubu, a Muslim, has fostered a sense of harmony among Christians, Muslims and traditionalists.
The Secretary also touched on the country’s economic progress, noting that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has grown by 4.4 %. He suggested this improvement reflects the current administration’s efforts to revitalise an economy that was struggling before President Tinubu took office.
Akume’s comments come as Nigeria continues to navigate its economic and political landscape, working to overcome challenges such as economic stagnation and social unrest. As the government moves forward, it remains to be seen how President Tinubu’s administration will address these issues and strive for a more stable and prosperous future for Nigeria.
