In a move aimed at promoting linguistic diversity and inclusion, the government of Botswana has introduced news bulletins in indigenous languages. President Duma Boko launched the bulletins in four languages—Ikalanga, Shekgalagari, Naro and Shiyeyi—on Monday, emphasizing that “no community should be invisible.” The bulletins will be broadcast on Botswana Television and Radio Botswana, marking the first phase of a broader initiative to expand state media coverage beyond English and Setswana.

The introduction of indigenous‑language news is expected to increase access to information for communities that have historically been underserved by mainstream media. By providing news in local tongues, the government aims to foster a sense of ownership and participation among citizens and to preserve cultural identity while promoting social cohesion.

Botswana’s vast linguistic diversity includes many distinct dialects and languages. The phased programme to open state media to diverse voices represents a significant development in the country’s media landscape, offering underrepresented communities a platform to express themselves and engage with the broader public. As the programme progresses, monitoring its impact will be essential to assess its effectiveness in promoting linguistic diversity and inclusion.

The launch has sparked interest in similar initiatives elsewhere. As governments and media organizations seek to promote inclusivity, the Botswana model may serve as a useful example. By recognizing and valuing indigenous languages, the initiative has the potential to contribute to a more vibrant and representative media ecosystem.
