Court documents reveal that Rinderknecht used ChatGPT to generate a dystopian image—a painting divided into distinct sections that depicts a burning forest, people fleeing, and a stark contrast between the impoverished and the wealthy. The image, released publicly through the court filings, is presented as an illustration of the alleged motivations behind the arson.
Investigators say they located Rinderknecht’s position at a hidden trail‑clearing where the fire ignited on January 1. At the time, he was working as an Uber driver. According to phone records, he made passenger trips around midnight on December 31, then drove to the Skull Rock Trailhead, where the blaze started shortly thereafter. The same data allegedly shows Rinderknecht attempted to call 911 at the time the fire began but was unable to connect because of poor reception.
Further evidence includes a query Rinderknecht allegedly made to ChatGPT, asking whether a person would be at fault if a fire were started by their cigarettes. This question, posed around the same time as the fire, leads authorities to suggest he was seeking a more innocent explanation for the blaze’s cause.
The Pacific Palisades Fire was a devastating event, scorching 23,000 acres and inflicting extensive damage. Initially, officials believed the fire was sparked by buried embers from the earlier Lachman Fire, which had begun on New Year’s Day.
