Why I defected to APC — Benue PDP's only Reps member

A member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Ojotu Ojema, officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) at a defection ceremony held on Friday, October 10, 2025, in the Government House, Makurdi, Benue State. The event attracted a large crowd of party supporters and senior government officials. Ojema, who represents the Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency, said his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was motivated by both spiritual and strategic considerations. He explained that divine direction inspired his move and that he wishes to contribute to Benue State’s development, emphasizing that the decision was carefully thought out to achieve specific objectives.

In his speech, Ojema reflected on his tenure as State Chairman of the Joint Public Service Negotiation Councils, where he helped secure approval of a N30,000 minimum wage. He praised Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia for ensuring the regular payment of workers’ salaries, describing it as the fulfillment of his long‑standing advocacy for civil‑servants’ welfare. Ojema also voiced strong support for Governor Alia’s infrastructure projects, particularly the road works linking Agatu and Gwer West Local Government Areas, which he believes will improve mobility, political engagement, and regional growth.

The lawmaker attributed his entire political journey to divine guidance, stating that he always seeks spiritual direction before making major decisions. His defection to the APC is viewed as a significant development in Benue State’s political landscape. Ojema said he will work to support the reelection of President Tinubu, Governor Alia, and his own candidacy in 2027, describing Governor Alia as a “fantastic leader” and the best thing to happen to the state. His move is expected to influence political dynamics in Benue State and across Nigeria.
