Hippopotamus Attack Prompts Safety Advisory in Gombe State

A recent deadly hippopotamus attack in Gombe State has prompted the government to issue a safety advisory, urging residents to exercise caution, particularly those living near riverine areas. The attack occurred on October 5 in the Dadinkowa River, resulting in the death of 19-year-old farmer Yahuza Bawa and seriously injuring his colleague, Abubakar.

According to Mohammed Fawu, Commissioner for Water, Environment, and Forest Resources, the state government responded swiftly to the incident, recovering Bawa’s body from the river for burial. Fawu expressed sympathy for the deceased’s family and noted that the government is working towards establishing a sanctuary for hippopotamuses to prevent similar clashes in the future.

The commissioner attributed the attack to the hippopotamuses’ aggressive behavior during their breeding period, when they feel threatened by human presence in the water. He warned farmers to be cautious and avoid the waters, as the animals are more aggressive at this time. Fawu also reported that despite the warning, some fishermen continued to fish in the area and were attacked, although no lives were lost.

Environmentalists, such as Ismail Bima, have urged fishermen to consider alternative means of livelihood, such as fish farming using ponds, to reduce the risk of encounters with hippopotamuses. Bima also called on the government to find a lasting solution to the challenge and to support residents in embarking on fish farming.

The incident has highlighted the need for coexistence between humans and wildlife in the area. The government’s efforts to establish a sanctuary for hippopotamuses aim to guarantee the safety of both humans and animals. As the state government continues to work towards a permanent solution, residents are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid encounters with hippopotamuses.

In the meantime, officials from the ministry will continue to sensitize communities around the riverbanks on the importance of coexisting with wildlife. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of finding a balance between human activities and wildlife conservation, and the need for sustainable solutions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
