A heated exchange erupted during Saturday’s game between the Montreal Canadiens and the New York Rangers at the end of the second period. The incident began when Rangers forward Sam Carrick hit Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson from behind as Hutson was clearing the puck. In retaliation, Montreal defenseman Arber Xhekaj engaged Carrick in a lengthy fight, trading punches for nearly 35 seconds before the referees intervened. Both players received five‑minute majors for fighting.
Despite the intense moment, the Canadiens fell 4‑3 to the Rangers. Montreal’s goals were scored by Juraj Slafkovsky, Nick Suzuki, and Noah Dobson, with Sam Montembeault making 18 saves. New York’s scoring came from J.T. Miller, Matthew Robertson, Artemi Panarin, and Mika Zibanejad, while Jonathan Quick stopped 21 shots.
The Canadiens started strong, opening the scoring 93 seconds in when Slafkovsky netted a goal assisted by Cole Caufield. Suzuki added a power‑play goal to double the lead, but the Rangers answered midway through the period with a goal from Zibanejad. In the third period, Miller deflected a point shot past Montembeault to tie the game. Robertson then gave New York the lead with a slap shot, and Panarin extended the advantage to 4‑2. Dobson pulled Montreal within one, but the team could not find an equalizer.
Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis reflected on the loss, saying, “It’s a 60‑minute game. When a team scores the next goal to make it 2‑1, it changes the game.” He also stressed the need for his players to perform better in front of goaltender Montembeault. Montreal will face the Buffalo Sabres on Monday, while the Rangers head to Minnesota to play the Wild.
