Defection: Kaduna now one big family - Uba Sani

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State attributed the recent wave of defections from opposition parties to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to his administration’s commitment to inclusivity, fairness and justice. Speaking at a mega rally in Kafanchan, where Senator Sunday Marshall Katung and three other legislators formally joined the APC, the governor highlighted how his leadership style has spurred significant infrastructural development across the state.

He recalled that on 29 May 2023 the opposition held 12 seats in the House of Representatives while the APC had only four. In the ensuing two and a half years, however, ten House members have defected to the APC, and seven members of the state House of Assembly have also switched parties. Governor Sani argued that this trend demonstrates the inclusive nature of his government and has turned Southern Kaduna—a former stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party—into an APC haven.

The governor emphasized that his administration is actively developing infrastructure, improving healthcare, education and agriculture, and ensuring that every local government benefits from these efforts. He cited road projects such as a 22‑kilometre asphaltic road in Zangon Kataf and a 24‑kilometre road in Sanga as concrete examples of progress.

Representing President Bola Tinubu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila attended the rally and praised Governor Sani’s achievements. Gbajabiamila noted that the president’s reforms have positively impacted the entire country and that “the best is yet to come.” The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, described the defections of Senator Katung and Representative Dan Amos as a “political earthquake,” lauding their leadership and integrity.

These defections mark a significant shift in Kaduna State’s political landscape, with the APC now dominating the region. Governor Sani’s focus on inclusivity and development appears to have resonated with the defecting lawmakers and their supporters. As the state continues to evolve politically, observers will watch how these changes affect Kaduna’s future and the APC’s national prospects.
