An explosion at a prison facility in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, has killed two inmates. According to Frank Okonkwo, the controller of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) in Akwa Ibom, the blast was caused by a faulty electricity transformer. The prison, located near the Government House in Uyo—where the state governor’s office and official residence stand—suffered a high‑voltage wire snap and fall onto part of the NCoS complex, plunging the area into a total blackout.
The two victims, both awaiting trial, were thrown from their seats and later pronounced dead by doctors at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. Two prison officials were also injured. The NCoS official called the incident unfortunate and expressed concern over the loss of life. Families of the deceased have been notified, and authorities have been urged to address the faulty transformer to prevent future tragedies.
The state government had previously planned to relocate the ageing prison to another area, but the move has not yet taken place. This incident highlights the need for improved infrastructure and maintenance at correctional facilities, as the Nigeria Correctional Service has struggled to provide safe, secure environments for inmates. A thorough investigation is expected, and steps should be taken to avoid similar incidents. The proximity of the prison to the Government House in Uyo raises additional concerns about potential risks, underscoring the urgency of addressing infrastructure and safety issues in correctional institutions.
