A delegation of House of Representatives lawmakers visited Governor Nasir Idris to request that the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, be renamed in honor of its slain Vice Principal, Hassan Yakubu Makuku. Led by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, the sympathy visit followed a brutal bandit attack on the school in the early hours of Monday, 17 November. During the assault, Vice Principal Makuku was killed while trying to protect his students, and 25 female pupils were abducted.
The Speaker described Makuku as a hero and urged the governor to immortalize his sacrifice by renaming the school. Governor Idris approved the request, acknowledging the Vice Principal’s bravery and the need to honor his memory. The renaming is intended to recognize Makuku’s dedication to his students and to provide a sense of closure for the school community.
The attack underscores the persistent security challenges facing educational institutions in the region and highlights the broader pattern of violent incidents targeting schools. The abduction of the 25 girls has raised serious concerns about their safety, prompting ongoing efforts to secure their release. Critics have pointed to the Nigerian government’s handling of the security situation, calling for stronger measures to protect schools, students, and staff.
Renaming the school serves as a tribute to Makuku’s courage and selflessness, emphasizing the importance of honoring educators and public servants who risk their lives for others. As the situation unfolds, attention will remain on rescuing the abducted students and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
