2027: Adamawa ADC calls for united national coalition to defeat APC

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has warned that Nigeria’s democracy is under threat from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, told Arise Television that the APC’s actions jeopardise the country’s democratic system. He said the ruling party is trying to destabilise opposition groups, including the ADC, which is a cause for serious concern.

Abdullahi’s remarks follow a petition submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that seeks to deregister the ADC on unspecified grounds. He alleged that the petition is part of a wider APC strategy to undermine opposition parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party and Social Democratic Party (SDP). According to Abdullahi, the individuals behind the petition are known affiliates of the APC.

The ADC’s apprehensions are not new; previous accusations have suggested that the ruling party is attempting to suppress dissenting voices and consolidate power. If left unchecked, such tactics could pave the way for a de‑facto one‑party state, posing a serious risk to Nigerian democracy. Abdullahi stressed the importance of building alternative political platforms to prevent this outcome.

Nigeria’s democratic system has faced numerous challenges in recent years, including concerns over election integrity and growing political polarization. The ADC’s warnings highlight the need for vigilance and a robust opposition to sustain a healthy democracy. As the nation navigates its complex political landscape, the actions of the APC and other major parties will be closely monitored by citizens, civil‑society groups and the international community, with significant implications for the country’s political stability and democratic future.
